Common Causes of Outboard Overheating
What an overheat alarm or a weak telltale stream usually means, and why continuing to run the engine is the costly mistake.

Outboard overheating is nearly always a loss of cooling water flow or a loss of heat transfer. The most frequent causes are a worn water-pump impeller, a blocked water intake, salt or scale build-up in the cooling passages, and a stuck thermostat.
The warning signs
- The telltale stream is weak, intermittent, hotter than usual, or absent.
- An audible overheat alarm sounds, or the engine goes into a protective reduced-power mode.
- The temperature gauge climbs above its normal range.
- Steam, an unusual smell, or paint discolouration around the powerhead.
Common causes
- A worn or damaged water-pump impeller, which is a wear item with a service interval.
- Sea grass, sand, silt or a plastic bag blocking the water intake screens, which is common in shallow Laguna Madre water.
- Salt and scale deposits restricting internal cooling passages on an engine used in saltwater without flushing.
- A thermostat stuck closed, or a failed poppet or pressure-relief valve.
- A blocked or corroded telltale outlet, which can look like an overheat when cooling is actually fine.
- A failed temperature sensor giving a false alarm.
Why running it 'just a bit further' causes real damage
An overheating powerhead can distort, scuff pistons, damage the head gasket and seize. The difference between an impeller service and a powerhead failure is often a few minutes of running after the alarm sounds.
A missing telltale on its own is not proof of overheating, but it should be treated as one until it has been checked.
What you can safely check or note yourself
- Did the alarm sound at idle, at cruise, or only under load?
- Was the telltale normal at start-up and then stopped?
- Were you running in shallow, grassy or silty water beforehand?
- When was the water pump impeller last replaced?
- Is the engine flushed with fresh water after saltwater use?
Safety
- Shut the engine down as soon as it is safe to do so, and plan to be towed rather than run it home.
- Do not open a cooling system or touch the powerhead, exhaust or telltale outlet while hot.
- Never reach near a running engine or the propeller to check water flow.
When professional diagnosis is appropriate
- Any overheat alarm, even if the engine seems to cool back down.
- The telltale is weak or absent and clearing the outlet does not restore it.
- The engine has been run for any length of time while overheating.
- The impeller service interval has passed or is unknown.
