- Is a voltage reading enough to judge a battery?

- Should I leave the battery switch off between trips?
- It depends on your boat — bilge pumps and some electronics may need to stay powered. What matters is knowing which circuits remain live and whether they are the reason the battery drains.
- Does corrosion on the terminals really stop the engine starting?
- It can. Corrosion adds resistance at exactly the point where the highest current is needed, so cranking suffers even when the battery is healthy.
