Age of the fuel, where it was purchased, additives used and how long the boat sat are established first.
Inspect and sample
The separating filter and, where accessible, a fuel sample are checked for water, colour, and debris.
Check the delivery path
Lines, fittings, the primer bulb and connections are inspected for air leaks, collapse and restriction.
Test delivery under load
Symptoms that appear only at higher RPM are tested for supply rather than assumed to be ignition.
Repair the cause
Filters, lines, bulbs or delivery components are addressed based on what testing shows, and the engine is re-tested.
What to know before the visit
- How old the fuel in the tank is and roughly how full the tank is
- Where the fuel was purchased and whether it is ethanol-blended
- Any additive, stabilizer, or water-removal product added
- How long the boat sat before the problem appeared
- When the fuel filter was last changed
- Whether the engine is carbureted or fuel injected, if you know
Fuel work on site
Filter changes, line and bulb inspection and delivery testing are commonly done where the boat is, provided the marina or property permits fuel handling and there is a safe, ventilated place to work. Draining or disposing of contaminated fuel is restricted at many locations and may require the boat to be moved. Internal injector servicing and ultrasonic injector cleaning are not advertised as available services.

- It is a common cause. Fuel degrades in storage, and ethanol blends can absorb water, so the fuel and filters are among the first things checked after a long layup.
- My primer bulb collapses while running. What does that indicate?
- A collapsing bulb usually means restriction between the tank and the engine — a clogged filter, a blocked vent or anti-siphon fitting, or a collapsing line.
- Will an additive fix water in the fuel?
- Additives cannot deal with a significant amount of water, and once phase separation has occurred the fuel itself has to be dealt with rather than treated.
- Do you clean fuel injectors?
