Mobile Service

How on-site boat repair works and where it can realistically be performed.

Does SPI Boat Repair come to the boat?

Yes. Work is performed as mobile service, meaning the technician travels to where the boat is kept.

That can be a marina slip, a dry-stack or storage yard, a driveway, or a boat sitting on its trailer, as long as the location can be reached and safely worked in.

Important: Access has to be arranged in advance. If a marina, gated community or storage facility requires permission, escort or a scheduled window, that has to be sorted out before the visit.

Can mobile service be performed at a marina?

Often, yes, but the marina has to allow outside contractors and the slip has to be reachable.

Some facilities require advance notice, a signed contractor agreement, insurance paperwork on file, or that the owner be present. Others restrict certain work at the dock.

Important: Marina rules are set by the facility, not by us. Confirm with your marina office first, and tell us the marina name and slip number when you request service.

Can every repair be completed on-site?

No. Many repairs can be done where the boat sits, but some cannot.

On-site work suits diagnosis, electrical faults, fuel-system service, maintenance, and component replacement. Work that needs the engine lifted, a lower unit fully disassembled, specialized equipment, or a controlled indoor space is not a dock-side job.

Important: Weather, tide, dock space, power availability and safety can also stop a job from being finished on-site. If that happens, you will be told what the constraint is rather than the work being forced.

Outboard Repair

Questions about outboard engines that will not run, or are not running right.

Can you diagnose an outboard that will not start?

Yes. A no-start outboard is one of the most common reasons owners call, and it starts with diagnosis rather than parts.

A no-start usually traces back to one of a few areas: battery and charging, the starting circuit, ignition, fuel delivery or fuel quality, or a safety interlock such as the kill switch or neutral safety switch.

Important: Repeated cranking can flood the engine, flatten the battery and overheat the starter. Stop cranking after a few attempts and describe what you observed instead.

What should I do if my outboard is overheating?

Shut the engine down as soon as it is safe to do so and do not keep running it.

An overheat alarm, a temperature warning or a weak or missing telltale stream means cooling flow or heat transfer has failed. Continuing to run the engine risks damage to the powerhead that is far more serious than the original fault.

Important: Do not touch a running engine, the propeller, or hot components while trying to check anything. Let the engine cool before it is inspected.

Which engine brands do you service?

A verified list of engine brands is not published here yet, and we would rather leave it blank than claim brands we have not documented. Tell us your engine make, model and year when you request service and you will get a straight answer about whether it can be worked on.

Important: Brand-specific dealer software and factory-only parts are not assumed to be available. If a repair needs something brand-restricted, that will be said plainly rather than worked around.

Diagnostics

What diagnosis involves and why it comes before parts.

Why does diagnosis come before a repair quote?

Because the same symptom can have several different causes, and each one carries different work.

A hard-starting engine can be a fuel problem, an ignition problem, a battery problem or a sensor problem. Diagnosis confirms which one it actually is, so parts are chosen from evidence rather than guesswork.

Important: Diagnosis identifies the fault. It does not guarantee that every fault can be corrected on the same visit, particularly when a part has to be sourced.

Can an intermittent problem be diagnosed?

Sometimes, but intermittent faults are harder and may need more than one look.

A fault that only appears under load, at a certain temperature, or after an hour of running may not reproduce while the boat sits still. Detailed notes on when it happens make a real difference.

Important: If a fault cannot be reproduced, replacing parts on suspicion is not a substitute for evidence, and it will not be recommended.

Marine Electrical

Wiring, batteries, charging and the faults that come from a salt environment.

Do you repair marine electrical problems?

Yes. Marine electrical work covers wiring faults, corroded connections, grounds, switches, fuses and breakers, charging circuits and accessory circuits.

In a salt-air environment, most electrical failures come down to corrosion and connection quality rather than the device that stopped working.

Important: Live electrical work near fuel systems and in wet spaces carries real hazards. Leave testing of a suspect circuit to a technician instead of probing it yourself.

What causes a boat battery to keep dying?

Usually one of three things: the battery is at the end of its life, something is drawing current while the boat sits, or the charging system is not replacing what is used.

A parasitic draw from a bilge pump, stereo memory, electronics or a wiring fault will flatten a healthy battery over days. A failing stator, rectifier or alternator will do it over hours of running. Corroded terminals imitate both.

Important: Repeatedly jump-starting a boat that keeps going flat hides the cause and can damage charging components. Testing tells you which of the three it is.

Maintenance

Keeping a saltwater outboard reliable between repairs.

How often should a saltwater outboard be serviced?

Follow the interval in your engine's owner manual, which is normally based on both hours run and elapsed time, whichever comes first.

Saltwater use is harder on an engine than freshwater use. Anodes, cooling components, fuel-system parts and lower-unit lubricant all deserve attention on schedule rather than after a failure.

Important: Manufacturer intervals vary by engine and model year, so the manual for your specific engine takes priority over any general rule of thumb.

My boat has been sitting for months. What should I expect?

Expect fuel, battery and cooling-system attention before it is treated as ready to run.

Fuel degrades, batteries self-discharge and lose capacity, water-pump impellers take a set, and corrosion advances quietly while a boat sits unused.

Important: Starting a long-idle engine before it is checked can push contaminated fuel through the system or run it without proper cooling flow.

Estimates and Scheduling

What to send, and what happens after you send it.

Do you provide estimates?

Yes, once there is enough information to give an honest one, which for most faults means after diagnosis.

Straightforward work such as scheduled maintenance can usually be scoped from the engine details alone. A fault with several possible causes cannot be priced accurately before it has been diagnosed.

Important: No pricing is published on this site. An estimate is specific to your boat, your engine and the confirmed fault.

What information should I provide before scheduling?

Boat make, model and year, engine make, model, year and horsepower, exactly where the boat is located, and a plain description of what it is doing.

It also helps to know when the symptom started, whether it happens cold or warm, at idle or under load, what warning lights or alarms appeared, what has already been replaced or worked on, and how the boat is accessed.

Important: Photos of the engine label and of anything visibly wrong are genuinely useful. Missing engine details are the most common reason a visit takes longer than it should.
