Yamaha Outboard Maintenance Checklist
A routine Yamaha outboard maintenance checklist covering the after-every-trip, 50-hour, 100-hour and annual items that matter most in saltwater use.

Yamaha outboard maintenance follows a simple rhythm: flush and rinse after every saltwater trip, inspect fuel, oil and anodes regularly, and follow the model's scheduled service intervals — typically an oil and filter change plus a gear-lube change each season or every 100 hours on four-strokes, with plugs, thermostats, impeller and fuel filters handled on the schedule in your owner's manual. Salt use shortens most of those intervals.
After every saltwater trip
- Flush the cooling system with fresh water using the flush fitting or muffs, following the procedure in the owner's manual for your model.
- Confirm a steady stream from the telltale (pee hole) while flushing.
- Rinse the cowling, powerhead exterior, mounting bracket, trim rams and transom hardware with fresh water.
- Tilt the engine down for a few minutes so water drains from the gearcase and exhaust path.
- Wipe down and dry the cowling seal so salt does not sit against it.
Monthly or roughly every 50 hours
- Check the engine oil level on four-stroke Yamaha outboards and top up only with the grade listed in the manual.
- Inspect the water-separating fuel filter and drain any water found.
- Look over fuel lines and the primer bulb for cracking, softness or weeping at the fittings.
- Check the sacrificial anodes on the gearcase, bracket and, where fitted, inside the powerhead. Replace once roughly half consumed.
- Check battery terminals for corrosion and confirm the connections are clean and tight.
- Grease the fittings listed in the manual — steering tube, tilt tube and propeller shaft.
Annually or every 100 hours
- Engine oil and oil filter change on four-strokes, using the specification in the Yamaha manual.
- Gear-lubricant change, inspecting the drained lubricant for water or metal.
- Spark plug inspection or replacement at the interval the manual specifies.
- Fuel filter replacement, including the on-engine filter where fitted.
- Water-pump impeller service — this is a wear item and a common cause of overheating when it is left too long.
- Thermostat and pressure-relief inspection on models where the schedule calls for it.
- Corrosion inspection of wiring, connectors, the mounting bolts and the transom.
Why saltwater changes the schedule
Around South Padre Island and the lower Laguna Madre, engines see warm salt water, sand and shell. Anodes are consumed faster, impellers wear sooner if the engine picks up grit, and corrosion attacks electrical connections long before anything fails outright.
Treat the manual's intervals as the outer limit rather than a target, and inspect the salt-sensitive items more often than a freshwater owner would.
Storage and layup between seasons
- Fill or stabilise fuel according to the manual so it does not degrade while the boat sits.
- Fog or treat the engine internals only if the Yamaha manual for your model calls for it.
- Store the engine trimmed down so water drains and the seals are not stretched.
- Disconnect and maintain the batteries on a suitable charger rather than leaving them to discharge.
- Record the hour meter reading at layup so the next service interval is easy to plan.
What you can safely check or note yourself
- What is the current hour-meter reading, and when was the last oil and gear-lube change?
- Is the telltale stream weaker, hotter or intermittent compared with last season?
- How much of each anode is left?
- Is there water in the fuel-separator bowl after a trip?
- Has the engine set any warning alarms or fault codes recently?
Safety
- Never run the engine without a proper water supply, and never start it with anyone near the propeller.
- Remove the key and the lanyard, and disconnect the battery before working near the propeller or electrical connections.
- Fuel and fuel vapour are flammable. Work in ventilated space and away from ignition sources.
- Used oil, gear lubricant and old fuel are pollutants. Contain and dispose of them properly.

When professional diagnosis is appropriate
- The engine overheats, alarms, or the telltale weakens even after flushing.
- Gear lubricant is milky, discoloured or contains metal.
- Anodes are being consumed unusually fast, which can indicate a stray-current problem.
- Scheduled impeller, thermostat or valve-clearance work is due.
- A fault code appears, or the engine runs rough after routine maintenance.
